Roulette bet types explained

Ever since the early days in Paris, in the late 1700’s, the roulette wheel has provided a popular form of gambling entertainment. Today, roulette continues to gain in popularity both in land-based and online casinos. For clarification, the types of American roulette bets are divided into two parts, the outside and the inside wager. You’ll find several roulette bet types explained in this article.

Outside Roulette Bet Types

These bets are placed outside the numbered-grid on the table and include the following types of wagers:

The even or odd bet means the gambler is wagering that on the next spin the ball will land on an even or odd number. The pay-out is the same for either.

A red or black stake works in the same manner, except this time the bet is that the ball will land in either a black or red colored slot. The payoff for either red or black is 1-1.

In a low bet the gamble is that the ball will land on a number between 1 and 18. This type of payoff is for even money. In a middle or high bet the principle is the same, that the ball will land on a number between 19 and 36, again with an even money payment.

Inside Roulette Bet Types

Inside bets include stakes that are placed on or between two numbers, on the end of a line, and at the junction of several numbers. These include:

A straight (or single) bet occurs when the wager is that the ball will land on a designated number. In this case, the odds will be 35-1.

A split bet involves a bet placed on two numbers. Both numbers must be adjacent to one another and the payout on either number will be 17-1. The trio bet (also called a street or stream bet) includes three numbers in a specific sequence that provides a return of 11-1.

A four-number (corner) bet must include four numbers that touch one another with odds of 8-1. The five-number (top line) bet can only include 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3, and the house-odds stand at 6-1. The six number (six-line) bet involves numbers lying in two consecutive rows with a pay-out of 5-1.

Additional bet types include column bets in which a number from a column of twelve numbers turns up. This type of bet is 2-1. A dozen bet involves numbers from a particular grouped unit of twelve showing up, either 1-12, 13-24, or 25-26. This type of bet would have a pay-out of 2-1.

With all wagers odds will vary depending on the version of roulette. It’s helpful to have roulette bet types explained and to practice playing roulette online for free.
