If you live in the State of Victoria, this year was an exceptionally good one for lottery players. Out of the 503 Division One prizes won by Australians throughout the year, 156 of them went to lottery players in Victoria.
These statistics and other interesting ones were published by Lotto this week regarding the demographics of Australian lottery winners.
Between December 1st 2015 and November 30th, Australians won nearly $1 billion in Division One prizes. $244 million was that was paid out to Victorians.
But when it comes to New South Wales, it is definitely a case of quality over quantity. While less winners hailed from this state, players from NSW won more money and, in total, $268 million was paid out in Division One prizes to lottery players.
Biggest Oz Powerball Lottery Prize
2016 will be remembered in lottery history as the year that one lucky Queenslander couple hit the jackpot in January and took home a staggering $70 million Powerball prize.
"Reflecting back on the year, there's certainly a number of division one winning stories from 2016 that have really resonated with people," noted a representative for Tatts Group Lotteries, Elissa Lewis.
"We kicked off the year with a big lotto bang when after seven weeks of jackpotting the mind-blowing $70 million Powerball prize was won in the Queensland suburb of Pialba by Hervey Bay grandparents."
"After six missed calls following the draw, the couple finally twigged that it was Golden Casket phoning about their staggering windfall and couldn't believe their luck."
The thrilled couple plan to travel with their amazing windfall. The woman added: "We won't have to be frugal anymore!"
NSW Man Wins $30 Million
It took NSW Lotteries more than a fortnight to reach the winner of a $30 million Oz Lotto jackpot prize earlier this year.
When the lottery finally caught up from the anonymous player who hails from a coastal town, he couldn't believe his luck.
"I'm gobsmacked at the moment," he recalled at the time. "I've got butterflies in my stomach.
The winner said that he would pay off his debts, buy a new car and "big boys toys" and travel the world.
